New I-80 Truck Parking Opens September 20th
I-80, spanning from one side of the country to the other, is no doubt one of the most traveled roads for commercial vehicles, so it stands to reason that along I-80 is a fantastic place to put more truck parking spaces. That is what the folks over at the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) deduced, and so after a few years of construction time two new truck parking facilities are being opened in the Equality State.
Details
The two trucking parking stations will officially open on September 20th, after approximately three years of construction efforts. They are located at the Quealy Dome truck parking lot (located at mile marker 290) and the Fort Steele Rest Area (located at mile marker 228).
With both facilities being able to house 100 parked trucks at any given time, this increases the number of parking spaces that commercial truckers can use along the I-80 by 200.
While the trucking industry is suffering from a bit of a parking epidemic, that is not the primary reason why WYDOT has constructed these parking areas. Instead, it is a part of the I-80 Winter Freight/BUILD project. Because of the turbulent weather that can often happen along I-80 (care to hear how Donner Pass got its name?), extra parking spaces will allow truckers to be able to rest and wait for the weather to clear up before continuing.
“If weather conditions are poor or I-80 is closed, the new truck parking will provide additional options for truck drivers to park safely while they wait for conditions to improve,” said Tim Morton, WYDOT District 1 Construction engineer.
Conclusion
Other truck parking facilities are expected to open along this key corridor due to $34 million in spending on the I-80 Winter Freight/BUILD project soon.
Whatever the reason for more truck parking, we are happy to see state governments applying taxpayer dollars towards something that benefits us all. Very few people would argue against using taxpayer money for the funding of infrastructure, especially for commercial vehicles that deliver approximately 70% of the nation’s freight.
