IRS Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Due August 31st
The IRS considers the fiscal year for the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) to start July 1st, the halfway point of the year. The taxman wants to remind fleets that it is time to pay the piper for trucks that will be used in full this year. We hope this guide makes the experience of paying this tax to have as little pain as possible for fleet owners. Although we are not tax lawyers, our sources will be from the IRS itself.
Details
Here is the 2023-2024 tax form 2290, HVUT. You will also need the instructions.
Payment is due August 31st to avoid penalties. To calculate how much you owe, determine how many vehicles of each weight category (22 in total, ranging from 55,000 pounds to over 75,000) your fleet will be operating, then calculate the amount due, enter the VINs for every vehicle on two separate sheets, and file. The fastest way to do all of this is through e-filing, with one of the IRS-approved businesses listed on their website.
If you put a truck into business after July, you can pay a reduced fee for a partial year. This information on how much you owe is located at the bottom of the instructions page. Because the payments for the tax year of 2023 are due at the end of August, you will have to file additional 2290 forms for months where you put vehicles into use. The due date for these particular 2290 forms is the last day of the month after the vehicle was first put into use. For instance, if a truck is on the road on February 8th, the due date is March 31st.
Conclusion
The entire information on the 2290 is much longer than this guide, coming in at a whopping 16 pages. Hopefully this guide will help give you the understanding you need to pay the HVUT without having to wade through the federal tax code.
Truckers feeling the sting from paying the HVUT can use Section 179 on their recent purchases to help reduce the total initial cost of ownership for a truck.
