I-80 Closures in California During the Summer
We have written about the I-95 collapse a bit this week, but that was inconvenient to truckers traveling on the east coast. It is time for west coast drivers to feel the pain of road repair, as Caltrans has planned to start repairing sections of Interstate 80.

Drivers that travel on I-80 between Hercules and Crockett (near San Francisco) are going to find themselves in a bit of trouble this summer, as Caltrans has announced closure of both sides of the road for four different weekends to repair the road. These stated weekends are to be July 21st, August 4th, August 18th, and August 31st, the last of which will include Labor Day Weekend. In total, Caltrans estimates that there will be 270 hours of closure that will be necessary to assure the safety of the road workers as they reinforce the highway.
Caltrans will be working on the eastbound side for the first three weekends, and will work on the westbound side of the highway during the last, longest weekend. This means that a trucker who is aware of these facts can still travel along one side of the highway depending on a specific week, so long as they remember which side is currently operable.
Caltrans has created a helpful webpage that is filled to the brim with information on the road project, including detour ideas if you ever find yourself in the middle of the Bay Area during these weekends and the side of the road you need to use is currently closed. Conclusion
Caltrans says that it has been decades since this section of road has been worked on, and as such is in desperate need of repair. Considering the damage that we saw on I-95 earlier this week, we are inclined to agree. Provided that Caltrans can sufficiently repair the roadway in the 270-hour window it has given itself, rather than stalling the project out for months, we believe this is a worthwhile investment in one of the most commonly used interstates in the nation.
