Pete Buttigieg Assesses I-95 Damage
The latest news in the transportation sector as a whole is the I-95 bridge collapse that happened as a result of a fire from an ignited tanker truck. The Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg was on the scene momentarily afterwards to assess the damage.
Details
Buttigieg gave a speech at the site on June 13th, saying that the closure of this major traffic artery is going to cause an increase in delivery costs because truckers will now need to take detours. The Transportation Secretary also said that the Department of Transportation is now working to mitigate the problem to the best of its ability. You can hear his entire speech below.
During the speech, Buttigieg said that the Department of Transportation is teaming up with GPS tech firms such as Waze to optimize alternative routes that drivers and commercial truckers alike can take instead of the damaged I-95 bridge.

Pete Buttigieg says that the replacement of this important piece of highway will take “weeks”, which, while long, is a time save from the initial estimate of numerous months. Current estimates pin the repair to be somewhere around late July and early August.
In our previous article, we wrote how nobody was hurt in the incident, but officials have since found an unidentified body; it is unsure if it is the driver of the tanker truck that had exploded.
Conclusion
Approximately 160,000 vehicles would normally travel across the section of road that is going to be replaced every day, meaning that if replacement finishes on August 1st, there will be 8,160,000 drivers inconvenienced by this turn of events.
Perhaps the most interesting part of this event is that PennDOT had declared the bridge that collapsed from the accident to be in good condition earlier this year. Clearly, this event serves as an example as to what happens when infrastructure we always take for granted to just be there suddenly is no longer usable.
As this saga is currently unraveling at the time of writing, we will be sure to provide you with any critical updates as they come along.
