Georgia DOT Plans Truck-Only Lanes on I-75
Traffic, one of the few things in the world that has universal revulsion. For truckers, it is doubly so: not only does it take longer to reach a destination, but because most truckers are paid on a per-mile basis, it impacts their paycheck. It is good news then that Georgia’s Department of Transportation (GDOT) is going ahead with work on what it calls the I-75 Commercial Vehicle Lanes (CVL) project.
Details
The plan is simple: build 41 miles of commercial-vehicle-only traffic spanning northbound from the I-75/I-475 interchange to the State Route 20 Interchange near McDonough. Towns it would travel through include Forsyth, Locust Grove, and the previously mentioned McDonough.
“The I-75 CVL modernizes infrastructure and operations to grow the economy, increase competitiveness, and improve quality of life,” GDOT said in a statement.
Currently the plan is thus:
- Accept public comments until May 28th to follow regulatory rules.
- Unless there are legitimate concerns from those comments, obtain federal approval for the construction project.
- Start construction at the end of 2026.
- Currently, there is no timeline for when the 41-mile stretch of commercial vehicle lanes will be finished.
Considering northbound on the I-75 at McDonough is one of the tightest bottlenecks for trucks in the entire nation, it will be interesting to see to what extent these added and exclusive lanes, when finished, reduce travel times for commercial vehicles.
Conclusion
If the project completes and turns out to be a major success, allowing otherwise idle trucks to pass through a busy section of Georgia in significantly reduced time, it is possible that we will see the same structure applied to other bottlenecks along the nation’s highways. Georgia is home to many of them (including nine of the top one hundred and four of the top ten, according to the American Transportation Research Institute), so GDOT would have plenty of opportunities to apply commercial-truck-exclusive lanes statewide.
GDOT has an extensive video covering the project’s scope, including additional details such as planned ramps connecting the commercial-truck-exclusive lanes with the I-75. You can view that video here:
