Georgia Announces State of Emergency in Response to Supply Chain Issues
Georgia Governor Brian B. Kemp has declared a State of Emergency in response to supply shortages within the Peach State. The Declaration is very broad, and truckers traveling within Georgia may find it to be lucrative.
Details
The Declaration is unique in its scope. Whereas other Declarations list what goods and types of people fall under exemption from specific regulations, this one applies “…for all supplies, goods, and services throughout Georgia.”
Of all the points listed in the Executive Order, three stand out the most for the average trucker.
Price Gouging
Price gouging of goods and services that enable people to act upon this State of Emergency, such as diesel fuel for trucks, is strictly prohibited. There is no mention of the price gouging of goods and services that the trucks themselves deliver, however with the added business competition that this Declaration provides, the chances of price gouging for other goods and services remains low.
Hours-of-Service
As with most State of Emergencies, the hours-of-service regulations are shelved, within reason. A trucker who is ill or fatigued is strictly forbidden from driving, and must take ten consecutive hours off-duty before returning to work.
Dimensions
A truck delivering goods in Georgia may be up to ten feet wide by one hundred feet long and have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of up to 95,000 pounds. This is compared to the averages of 8.5 feet width, 72 feet width, and GVWR of up to 80,000 pounds.
Conclusion
As per usual with these Declarations, nothing in it should be construed as a ticket to break other rules and regulations not listed within it.
The Declaration is set to end either when it is rescinded or at 11:59 PM on May 15th, whichever happens first. If the Declaration proves to be popular and effective, it may be extended in the future.
If the Declaration proves to be extremely popular, we may see similar action taken in other states to help resolve supply chain issues. We will keep you posted if anything happens on that front.
