Freight Rates For August and September 2023
When there is a lot going on in the trucking industry, it makes sense for us to do freight rate updates less often than once a month. For now, here are freight rates for August and September.
August 2023 Rates
- Dry van hauling jumped two cents per mile to $2.08.
- August saw a short drop for flatbeds, three cents to $2.50 for each mile traveled.
- Reefer rates appreciated dramatically; an increase of seven cents to $2.50, tying it with flatbed.
- The average rose two cents per mile to $2.36.
September 2023 Numbers
- Dry van increased a further three cents to a per-mile rate of $2.11.
- Flatbed leveled out, hovering at $2.51 per mile.
- Reefer went up two cents compared to flatbed’s one, so reefer is once again king of the road at $2.52 per mile.
- The average increased the same amount as it did in August, two cents, $2.38.
Conclusion
It is quite surprising to see reefer take a backseat to flatbed rates during the hot days of summer and then usurp flatbed when fall starts arriving. However, if there is one thing we learned since the turn of the decade, it is that the trucking industry is ever-evolving. Having just experienced an unprecedented time where drivers could purchase a new commercial vehicle, drive it for a year, and then sell it for more than its original purchase price, it seems as though anything can happen, including demand for reefer hauling increasing as temperatures in the United States start to dwindle. We will just have to see what happens as the holiday season starts to accelerate. Maybe ice cream will top people’s wish lists!
