FMCSA Extends Pandemic License Relief
President Donald J. Trump signed Executive Order No. 13924,85 FR 31353 on May 19th, 2020. This directed federal agencies, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, to take action in fighting not just the coronavirus pandemic, but the economic damages resulting from the pandemic as well.
One way the FMCSA took action was to suspend the need to renew expiring Commercial Learner’s Permits (CLPs), Commercial Drivers Licenses (CDLs), and medical certification. The suspension originally lasted until the end of June but has been extended until the end of September.
Details
This exemption is not a blanket suspension. There are rules regarding who it applies to. If the certification or license was valid on February 29th, 2020, but has since expired, it is still valid. The FMCSA will not punish the driver or the motor carrier for which he or she works using the expired materials.
If your license expired at the end of January, and you did not renew, you are not eligible for this exemption.
You must also follow other regulations and laws, and once the suspension expires, get a renewal as soon as possible.
Conclusion
There is a likely chance the pandemic will end and most of its economic damage recovered by the first of October. As a result, the odds this license exemption is extended yet again is unlikely. The notice is readable in full on the FMCSA’s webpage. Until the pandemic passes, always remember to drive safely and use gloves at the diesel pump!
