First Ever Mayberry Truck Show Held in North Carolina
In an era of trucking where events are being canceled left and right, it is good to see new trucking events taking place. This is the first-annual Mayberry Truck Show.
Humble Origins
The event was hosted by Mitchell Bottomley, owner of Bottomley Enterprises. The company specializes in growing and delivering seasonal items such as pumpkins for Halloween/Thanksgiving, and pine trees for Christmas.
While it would have been easy enough to just call the event the Bottomley Truck Show, Mitchell already had a name in mind. Living in Mount Airy, North Carolina, he named the show the Mayberry Truck Show.
Mount Airy’s most famous resident was Andy Griffith, the star of the self-titled Andy Griffith show. He played the sheriff of the town of Mayberry.
Though Mount Airy is not actually Mayberry, it might as well be. The city has come to embrace the Mayberry name, with numerous businesses, plus one trucking show, named after it.
The Show
The show had numerous events. There were over three hundred heavy-duty trucks on display. There were carnival games, including the opportunity to dunk Mitchell Bottomley himself into a tank of water. The event ended with a massive firework show full of pyrotechnics. Plus, with the event taking place mostly outdoors, masks were a rare sight to behold.
The biggest event, however, was the truck parade, a convoy 50 miles in length. The Bottomley family auctioned off the order for the trucks in the convoy, so a trucker paying more can opt to go to the front.
With 100% of the auction’s proceeds going to Brenner Children’s Hospital, the guests to the event, a few thousand in total, raised $351,644 in approximately 30 minutes.
Conclusion
The Mayberry Truck Show’s inaugural run is a shining example of the trucking industry’s generosity and resilience. In spite of everything that has happened recently, the trucking industry continues to haul America’s freight and does not forget about the little guy. Andy Taylor–the Sheriff of Mayberry–would be proud.
With the first show a resounding success, the Bottomley family is already planning for another next October. You can receive updates as details unfold on their main website.
