EPA Wants to Remove Greenhouse Gas Regulations Altogether
Under the watch of Lee Zeldin, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) wants to rescind Obama-Era endangerment findings and regulations. Doing this would remove the EPA’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases.
Details
“With this proposal, the Trump EPA is proposing to end sixteen years of uncertainty for automakers and American consumers,” Zeldin said in a statement regarding the move. “If finalized, rescinding the Endangerment Finding and resulting regulations would end $1 trillion or more in hidden taxes on American businesses and families.”
The question that remains, of course, is what effect removing the regulations would have on the trucking industry. The most likely outcome is that vehicles will be manufactured to find a balance between purchase price and fuel savings, as building trucks back to simply getting two miles per gallon would not be economically viable when diesel fuel stands at abnormally high prices.
The statement was met with positive reception from trucking industry leaders, including the American Trucking Associations’ Chris Spear.
“We commend President Trump and EPA Administrator Zeldin for taking decisive action to rescind the disastrous GHG Phase 3 rule,” said Spear in a statement. “We thank the Trump Administration for returning us to a path of common sense, so that we can keep delivering for the American people as we continue to reduce our environmental impact.”
Conclusion
As with most changes within the Trump Administration, this will likely be challenged by a multitude of lawsuits and court cases before it goes anywhere. One potential strategy by environmental activists could be to delay the rescinding for as long as possible with legal battle and appeal after appeal until the 2028 election, where a more regulative president may just rescind the rescind, setting things back to what they were in the early 2010s..
“Let’s be clear, this move doesn’t help the trucking industry. It hurts it, it penalizes fleets that have already committed to electric trucks, and throws a wrench into long-term planning for businesses across the industry,” Craig Segall, former deputy executive officer and assistant chief counsel of the California Air Resources Board, said. “It creates market instability just when we need certainty.”
