EPA Outlines Standards for 2032
At first glance, this article may seem like deja vu. After all, the EPA’s established truck standards for 2027 and California’s electric truck mandate for 2035 have been recent topics in the news. But what if you live in the other 49 states and want to prepare even further ahead than merely four years? The Biden Administration’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has now released its goals for vehicles in 2032.
Details
In a statement from the White House, the EPA has proposed the following requirements on new vehicle sales in the union when 2032 rolls around:
- 67% of all light-duty vehicles sold are to be fully electric.
- 50% of vocational vehicles, such as buses and cement mixers, sold in 2032 are to be fully electric.
- 35% of new regional heavy-duty trucks sold are to be fully electric.
- 25% of all new long-haul big rigs are to be fully electric.
With California requiring 50% of all new tractors sold within state borders to be fully electric by that time, the fourth point will require less than 25% by the other states, as the quota is on the national level.
While these metrics are by no means as ambitious as the ones set by California, they are still quite a goalpost to reach. California itself, which touts itself as one of the most green-thinking state governments, currently only has two percent of all new heavy-duty trucks sold as fully electric.
As to be expected, industry leaders said that these goals may have negative impacts on the nation’s supply chain. American Trucking Associations President and CEO Chris Spear responded to the news by saying, “The Phase 3 standards must take into account the complex challenges and operating conditions facing motor carriers as we manage the transition to a zero-emission future while simultaneously moving more than 72% of the economy’s freight.”
Conclusion
Will our nation be able to meet these goals in the next nine years? Only by heavily investing in electric charging infrastructure is the United States even going to be able to withstand this change of pace.
As the regulations require the quota for the sale of new trucks in 2032, it is also possible that this will create the unintended consequence of boosting demand for used models when the new rules kick in, but that is just speculation; we will have to wait and see what happens.
