It all started with $2,300 and a dream.
In the third legislative district for the New Jersey Senate, Edward Durr has beaten Stephen Sweeney in a political upset that shocked the nation. The best part of all is that Edward Durr is no career politician, he’s a truck driver for a furniture company.
When you read the title of this article, you may be inclined to believe that Edward Durr will be representing New Jersey on a national level in Washington D.C., however, he won a senate seat in the state senate, a political system that functions much like the federal government, on the state level with the governor instead of the president.
Edward Durr, truck driver for Raymour & Flanigan, ran for the New Jersey General Assembly (parallel to the House of Representatives) in 2017 and 2019. As a truck driver by trade rather than politician, he ran his various campaigns, including his most recent senate bid, on shoestring budgets.
Durr says that his inspiration to run came from being unable to obtain a concealed carry permit despite having a clean record.
Despite spending less than one percent of his opponent’s campaign, he defeated his opponent in what is considered the political upset of the year. He does not take any credit for his victory, but rather pins the result as backlash for recent governmental changes such as mask and vaccine mandates.
Considering in the same election cycle Seattle elected its first Republican mayor in over three decades, his words appear to be substantial.
What Happens Next
The New Jersey Senate still has a Democrat majority, so Durr’s election will not cause earth-shattering changes to the state, but at the very least the legislative body will have a more “common-man” demographic. Stephen Sweeney being a member of the New Jersey Senate since 2010, it will be a chance to have some new blood in the system.
At the very least, New Jersey will likely not become the next Connecticut, and more trucker-friendly laws may be passed within the Garden State.
