DOT Ideas Wanted
Under the Trump Administration, the Department of Transportation (DOT) wants to slash regulations so that commercial businesses that utilize America’s infrastructure can thrive, but it is a bit lost as to where to start. With President Trump upping the ante of regulations cut versus added from 2:1 to 10:1, the DOT needs to get busy. To that end, it is asking for your opinion. Yes, the person reading this article!
Details
Not the person reading this article in particular per se, but truckers and small businesses.
“The DOT seeks comments and information to assist DOT in identifying existing regulations, guidance, paperwork requirements and other regulatory obligations that can be modified or repealed, consistent with law, to ensure that DOT administrative actions do not undermine the national interest and that DOT achieves meaningful burden reduction while continuing to meet statutory obligations and ensure the safety of the U.S. transportation system” the DOT said in its official statement.
Want your voice to be heard? You can send an email to Transportation.RegulatoryInfo@dot.gov at any point before it is shut down and send your ideas on how the DOT can do its job without being cumbersome. Some questions the DOT wants considered (paraphrased for brevity):
- Are there regulations that are illogical or have become unnecessary or ineffective?
- How can the agency best obtain and consider accurate, objective information and data about the costs, burdens and benefits of existing regulations, guidance and reporting requirements?
- Are there regulations that are still necessary but have not operated as well as expected such that a modified or slightly different approach at lower cost is justified?
- Are there regulations, guidance, or reporting requirements that have become outdated or overtaken by technological developments? Can new technologies be leveraged to modify, streamline, or rescind existing regulations, guidance, or reporting requirements?
- Are there regulations, guidance or reporting requirements that unnecessarily obstruct, delay, curtail or otherwise impose significant costs on the siting, permitting or delivery of transportation projects?
- Does DOT currently collect information that it does not need or use effectively?
Conclusion
Aside from sending an email, you can also submit public comments on the announcement done via the Federal Register. Comments close May 5th, but if you miss the deadline, you can still utilize the email address above to get your suggestions in.
