CVSA International Roadcheck 2021 Statistics
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck for 2021 was May 4-6th (though we erroneously reported it as 5-7th earlier this year). Now, they have released the statistics to the public. How does it compare to the International Roadcheck nine months prior?

Conclusion
Perhaps the most interesting statistic to pull from all of this is the total number of drivers placed out-of-service compared to last year: despite having only about 80% the number of total inspections, around 50% more drivers were taken off the road. These two numbers combine to almost double the percentage rate.
In terms of vehicles, however, North America did better than last time. 16.4% is a larger number of vehicles to find in need of repair, but it is significantly better than more than one-in-five as there were last September.
Mexico had by far and away the lowest rate of out-of-service declarations, but considering Mexico only did vehicle-only inspections, it is not fair to say drivers from Mexico are inherently better or worse at maintenance and driving. What might be fair to say is that Canadians need some sleep: of the 139 driver violations issued in Canada, a majority of them (89 total) were from hours-of-service. To compare, the United States rate was 33.6% of all driver violations belonging to hours-of-service violations. The specific number of drivers given this violation is obscured by the fact that a driver can receive multiple violations for different offenses.
Be safe, be prepared for the 2022 International Roadcheck, and remember to buckle up!
