CVSA Hazmat Blitz 2022
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is no stranger to having inspections on commercial vehicles for safety purposes, lest we forget the International Roadcheck that happened earlier this year. As it turns out, they have done another one, this time, the Hazardous Materials/Dangerous Goods Road Blitz.
Details
If this is your first time hearing about this event which already happened, that was the point. While the CVSA announces other inspection events in advance, the organization kept it a secret so that fleets could not prepare with advanced maintenance or by avoiding driving altogether. A little unfair, but because hazardous material drivers need to have their ducks in a row at all times otherwise someone may get hurt, they are held to a higher standard than the average trucker.
The event happened June 13th to the 17th. Here are some statistics resulting from the event:
- The inspection blitz happened in both the United States and Canada, but with more checks done in the United States, which is why the bulk of all captured violations happened in the United States of America.
- The most common hazardous material class to receive an inspection was Class 3, flammable liquids. This encompasses fuels such as gasoline and diesel. The least? Class 7, radioactive materials, with only nineteen inspections
- Beyond vehicles and drivers being in a less-than-optimal state, hazardous material drivers also have their own set of unique potential violations. The most common one, at 408 violations, related to shipping papers being filled out incorrectly.
- With over 6,200 vehicles examined and over 1,500 violations, there is a violation rate of less than 25%.
The CVSA hopes that the Hazardous Materials/Dangerous Goods Road Blitz will raise awareness for both dangerous goods haulers and others of the inherent safety precautions that must be taken when hauling such materials.
Conclusion
We would love to tell you when the next event is going to happen, but the CVSA is keeping their plans under wraps for reasons previously mentioned. The pattern from the last three events, however, gravitate towards summer months, with 2022 and 2021 happening in June and 2019 in August. We advise, however, that you keep your drivers, vehicles, and packaged goods in optimal shape throughout the year!
