Cummins, Daimler, and PACCAR to Build Battery Plant
When it comes to electric trucking, one of the largest obstacles blockading it from becoming the primary fuel source is the dearth of batteries. A joint venture by Accelera (owned by Cummins), Daimler Trucks, PACCAR, and foreign tech startup Eve Energy Company are coming together to build a new plant in the USA to produce more truck batteries.
Details
The joint venture, estimated to cost $3 billion in investment, will be a 30-30-30-10 split between the three truck companies and the one electronics company, respectively. There are currently no details regarding the location of the factory other than being in the United States, but they estimate that the factory will be a powerhouse of production, creating 21 gigawatt-hours of (presumably rechargeable) battery.
The four companies predict that this investment will not only be good for the environment by making electric trucks more prevalent, but will create numerous U.S. manufacturing jobs. The Chief Executive Officers of all three companies released statements voicing their glowing approvals of the investment.
Cummins CEO Jennifer Rumsey said: “Not only are we advancing a key technology solution for our customers, but accelerating the energy transition in the United States.”
Daimler CEO Martin Daum focused more on the economic side of the equation. “This planned joint venture enables economies of scale beyond Daimler Truck. It is a key puzzle piece of our battery industrialization strategy, ensuring access to the right battery cell technology at the right cost.”
Finally, PACCAR CEO Preston Feight focused on the employee and the customer in his statement. “Our vision is the highest quality, locally produced battery technology to enhance the operations of our customers and help them achieve their operational and environmental goals.”
Conclusion
With the joint venture established, the construction for the factory project is expected to begin imminently. There is currently no time table as to when the production plant will be finished and truck batteries for the three major truck manufacturers will start rolling off the conveyor belts, but we will be sure to update you if we learn any new and exciting information about this ambitious endeavor.
