CAT Engines and Their Variations
Caterpillar Inc. manufactures dump trucks (lovingly referred to as off-highway trucks), complete with their in-house engines to get the job done. In this article we will be going over the specifications for their most popular engines, that is, those that appear most often in their dump truck models. The full list, complete with over eighty different forms of industrial engines, can be viewed on their website.
C175-16
The first model we are looking at is most peculiar: it was originally designed as a marine engine, but has since found a place amongst CAT’s dump truck lineup. This machine is not a joke: while the average Cummins powertrain may weigh between 2000 and 3000 pounds, the C175-16 weighs in at 28750 pounds. The extra weight comes with its benefits: the engine generates up to 3420 brake horsepower, meaning horsepower without factoring in the energy use needed to run auxiliary components of the vehicle such as the water pump and radio. Unless you work in a mine or other place where volume is absolutely more important than the number of trips you need, using a dump truck that has one of these engines may be overkill.
Specifications
Power Range: 2683-3420 BHP
Speed: 1600-1800 RPM
Bore: 6.88 inches
Stroke: 8.66 inches
Displacement: 5166.88 cubic inches
Dry weight: 28750 pounds
Height: 97.6 inches

C15
This engine is much more in line with the engines found in heavy-duty trucks such as a Volvo. This engine is about 1/11th the size and weight of its C175 counterpart. Naturally, it is used in smaller dump trucks, ones that do not require the use of a ladder to climb into effectively.
Specifications
Power Range: 475-580 HP
Torque: 1958 pound-feet at 1400 RPM
Speed: 1800-2100 RPM
Bore: 5.4 inches
Stroke: 6.7 inches
Displacement: 927.6 cubic inches
Dry weight: 3673 pounds
Height: 25.7 inches
Length: 45.4 inches
Width: 43.8 inches
Used in: 770G

C27
The C27 is a little lighter than twice the weight of the C15, which makes sense when you consider the number. CAT describes the C27 as “a fully-configurable common core engine that makes installation across a wide variety of applications simple.” The models of dump truck this engine is used in are much bigger than the 770G, that is for sure.
Specifications
Power Range: 800-1050 HP
Torque: 3448 pound-feet at 1200 RPM
Speed: 1800 RPM
Bore: 5.4 inches
Stroke: 6 inches
Displacement: 1649.5 cubic inches
Dry weight: 6625 pounds
Height: 53.9 inches
Length: 73.8 inches
Width: 63 inches
Used in: 773G, 775G

C32
When it comes to specification statistics, the C32 is but a small increase to an already large beast. This is because, as CAT puts it, “the C32 was created to eliminate the need for thermal management and DEF, reducing the size of the overall engine package.“ The dump truck that uses the C32 is massive, the largest one CAT has that does not require a ladder to climb.
Specifications
Power Range: 1000-1200 HP
Torque: 4056 pound-feet at 1200 RPM
Speed: 1800 RPM
Bore: 5.7 inches
Stroke: 6.4 inches
Displacement: 1958.9 cubic inches
Dry weight: 6625 pounds
Height: 53.9 inches
Length: 73.8 inches
Width: 63 inches
Used in: 777G
Details about the C32 are on its webpage.
Conclusion
Dump trucks fulfill a specific job that heavy-duty trucks could never complete, and as such require specific engines to get the job done. Even if that engine was originally designed for marine machines, it can still be put into a massive dump truck to fulfill needs to be done at a mine or quarry.
