California Offers Incentives for Zero Emission Vehicles

California may be strict with its upcoming emission regulations, but that does not mean that fleets traveling in the Golden State are being left in a river without a paddle. As such, California is offering to pick up the tab on the purchase of new electric or hydrogen vehicles.

Regardless of whether your business operates garbage trucks or heavy-duty Class 8 big rigs, it is likely there is an option for you. Check on the relevant website to see which options are available for vouchers that can reduce the overall purchase price of such a vehicle.

The voucher is further adjusted by the size of the business, with smaller fleets getting a bigger voucher:

• 10 or fewer medium or heavy-duty trucks: +15%.
• 11 to 100: +0%.
• 101-500: -20%.
• 500+: -50%.

Though larger fleets only receive as little as half of the incentive to purchase a new zero-emission vehicle, there is currently, at the time of writing, no hard limit to the number that an individual business can purchase with this incentive.

For the trucking industry, the website offers trucks from eight different brands of big rig truck makers, ranging from the tried-and-true Freightliner to new companies on the scene such as Nikola.

Conclusion

This voucher program is a decent way to mitigate some of the costs that will come with the 2036 regulation that requires all new purchases to be one of these vehicles, and the 2042 regulation that prohibits driving a diesel truck within state borders, period. Considering that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is still planning to all-in on zero emission vehicles in the next twenty years, it is nice to keep this information in the back of your head.
