ATRI Surveys Truckers Regarding Driver-Facing Cameras
The American Transport Research Institute wants to know your thoughts on driving-facing cameras. Are they a bastion of vindication from verdicts in the outcome of a crash, or are they a massive invasion of privacy?
Details
The survey, which you can take on the relevant ATRI webpage, is twenty questions, and takes no more than ten minutes to complete.
First, it asks the driver about their demographics (how long their average trip is, their age range, etc.), then asks if they have road-facing cameras and/or driver-facing cameras in their truck. Finally, it asks the trucker how he or she feels in regards to the two different directional cameras, and asks for any suggestions on how to make drivers more comfortable in using driver-facing cameras.
The main purpose of this survey is to gauge the difference in favorability between the two types of cameras. While previous ATRI surveys have shown positive reception for road-facing cameras in promoting safety, numerous drivers voiced concerns regarding driver-facing cameras.
The ATRI is generally in favor of having them implemented, and wants a snapshot of information for how the trucking industry currently views them.
The survey is funded in part by the OOIDA Foundation, a non-profit offshoot of the OOIDA pursuing issues that permeate all sides of the trucking industry. Safety is but one of the things the Foundation tackles.
Conclusion
Driver-facing cameras have been a hotly-contested issue within the industry ever since it has been introduced. In 2014, then-California Attorney General Kamala Harris declared an opinion stating that trucking companies may take disciplinary action based on what the company sees happen from the camera. In 2017, the Quebec Superior Court ruled that the driver’s right to privacy outweighed the added safety bonuses. As with most technological changes in the trucking industry, it depends on who you ask. Hence, the survey from the ATRI.
If you have concerns to voice in regards to driver-facing cameras, including auxiliary things such as installation costs for retrofitting should they become required on all trucks, this survey is perhaps the best chance of having those problems addressed and potentially resolved.
