California Has Wildfire State of Emergency
It would not be a summer season in California without rampaging wildfires, would it? Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a State of Emergency.
Details
In the middle of a historical drought, California is prime land for wildfires in the season with the highest temperature.
While the fires have not burned to the same extent as the Dixie fire of last year, the acreage is still very large; the McKinney Fire has already devastated 29,000 acres and shows no signs of slowing down.
So in direct response to the wildfires, Governor Gavin Newsom has listed some temporary changes to help the citizenry. There are three in particular that affect truckers in the area. From the Declaration:
“Vehicle Code sections 9265(a), 9867, 14901, 14902, and 15255.2, requiring the imposition of fees, are suspended with regard to any request for replacement of an identification card, driver’s license card, vehicle registration certificate, certificate of title, or registration stickers, by any individual who lost such records as a result of these fires. Such records shall be replaced without charge.”
This means that trucking businesses in the affected areas, most notably Siskiyou County, can get damaged paperwork replaced at no charge, provided it can prove that the paperwork was lost by the fires. Additionally:
“The provisions of Vehicle Code sections 4602 and 5902, requiring the timely registration or transfer of title are suspended with regard to any registration or transfer of title by any resident of Siskiyou County, who is unable to comply with those requirements as a result of these fires. The time covered by this suspension shall not be included in calculating any late penalty pursuant to Vehicle Code section 9554.”
Trucking businesses in areas directly impacted by the wildfires will find themselves about to hold off on registering and transferring title without penalty. Perhaps the most important:
“As necessary to assist local governments and for the protection of public health and the environment, state agencies shall enter into contracts to arrange for the procurement of materials, goods, and services necessary to quickly assist with the response to and recovery from the impacts of these fires…”
Demand for trucking services are expected to increase within the Golden State in the next few weeks as the state government enlists the help of truckers to deliver necessary goods.
Conclusion
There is something of an irony going on in this 3,000-mile wide nation that we have: the west coast is on fire due to a lack of water, while other states (Kentucky, West Virginia, and recently Virginia and Montana) are suffering from rampant flooding. Perhaps the federal government or numerous state governments can work together to create a pipeline of water to transfer it from where there is too much to where there is too little.
