April 2021: Trailer Sales Shatter Same Time Last Year
ACT Research has published the results of trailer sales for April 2021, and the numbers when compared to the fourth month last year, when the coronavirus pandemic was in full force, can be succinctly described by this GIF:
In short, the numbers are exploding!
The Numbers
Looking at the transition from March to April, you may be inclined to believe the trucking industry is running out of fuel. At 14,400 new trailers ordered for the month, April saw a 52% decrease from March.
Compared to the same month in 2020, however, the trailer sales show a 3600% increase, or 37 times as many trailers.
Comparing the various numbers of the trucking industry from month to month, however, the industry does show the slightest amount of wavering. Soaring lumber costs no doubt caused an increase in the purchase price of dry vans with wooden floors, causing there to be a predicted shortage parallel to the chip shortage affecting the manufacturing of trucks in the foreseeable future.
There are arguments to be made both for putting off a trailer purchase for now and buying them as soon as possible. With order backlogs spanning months, trying to purchase one now will invariably come with a longer wait, a higher price tag, or both. At the same time, the markets for the materials that comprise trailers are fairly unpredictable, so it is hard to tell just how long the wait will be before supply and demand reach equilibrium.
