CARB Announces Electric Vehicle Rebates
They say what goes for California, the most populous state in the nation and the one with the highest gross domestic product, goes for the rest of the nation. Recently, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has suffered court losses regarding their authority to prohibit certain trucks, but that is not enough to stop CARB from encouraging trucking companies to make the switch from diesel to alternative fuels. Now, CARB hopes to use a carrot rather than a stick–rewarding those who decide to change as opposed to punishing those who do not.
Details
The California Clean Fuel Reward (CCFR) is a program that is simple in nature: purchase an eligible battery-electric vehicle within California’s state borders, and receive money that reduces the total cost of the vehicle. Savings range from $120,000 for vehicles weighing greater than 33,000 pounds down to $7,500 for those weighing at least 8,501 pounds.
The program is sponsored by various entities within California, including:
- CARB
- Pacific Gas & Electric Company
- San Diego Gas & Electric
- Los Angeles Department of Water and Power
- Sacramento Municipal Utility District
Making this a statewide endeavor. The program is estimated to spend $1 billion through 2030.
“By returning revenue from the Low Carbon Fuel Standard directly to truck buyers at time of purchase,” said CARB chair Lauren Sanchez, “we’re making zero‑emission trucks the better choice for fleets and delivering cleaner air along freight corridors where it’s needed most.”
When one of the biggest obstacles keeping trucking companies from transitioning is sticker shock, Lauren Sanchez may just have a point.
Conclusion
At the same time, however, sticker shock is only one objection that is keeping truckers from transitioning to fuel sources other than diesel. The other notable one is charging time, and although steps are being taken to implement charging stations across the United States, it will be quite some time before it becomes the norm, similar to how petroleum fuel stations took time to dot the landscape.
Currently, the CCFR is accepting initial enrollments and does not currently list the vehicles eligible for rebate, but that may change soon.
