Baltimore Considers Truck Parking Ban
When it comes to the truck parking saga, there is always an update. 11 spots per truck going down to 10 spots per truck (estimated), an opening of a variety of spots from both the private and public sector, but worst of all is when we have to report municipalities trying to solve the symptoms of truck parking woes without addressing the underlying cause. The most recent city to take up this position: Baltimore, Maryland.
Details
The Baltimore City Council is debating a Bill that, should it become official law, would prohibit commercial trucks from parking for longer than an hour between 7 A.M. and midnight, with no time allowed at all for 1 A.M. to 7 A.M. (presumably, for street cleaning purposes). Commercial trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 20,000 pounds or more can find themselves fined for $500 for each offense.
Should it pass, Baltimore would just be the latest city in a string of parking bans. College Station, Texas implemented a ban in 2024, St. Paul in 2023, and New York City in 2022. Considering these truck parking bans often only have exceptions for loading, unloading, repair, and maintenance, Baltimore’s proposed truck parking ban is actually fairly lenient as it often provides truckers with an hour of parking time before they have to move.
Conclusion
Although this news is sour for truck drivers planning to drive to or through Charm City, it is a loss in a sea of winds. In the time between us reporting about this truck parking ban in Baltimore and the one in College Station, the trucking industry has seen:
- Plans for 1,200 spots of Pennsylvania Parking in 2026.
- JFK International Airport breaking ground on new parking spots to help with cargo management and mitigate concerns of truck parking in New York City.
- The Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signing off on a Bill that approves $200 million for truck parking funding.
As long as the good news of more parking spots continues to outpace the bad news of truck parking bans, the crisis that we often report about may eventually come to an end.
