Truckers Urged to Fill Out DOT Parking Survey
Now is your chance to get your voice heard and make some real change in one of the greatest issues facing the trucking industry: the parking shortage.
Details
Jason’s Law requires the federal government, namely, the Department of Transportation, to “periodically” conduct surveys to evaluate the status of trucking parking shortages across the nation. The system in place does not have a required timeline, making “periodically” vague; the prior two times this survey was conducted were in 2015 and 2019.
Approximately seven years later, it is back. Drivers can access the relevant survey webpage to voice their experiences and opinions regarding parking spots within commercial driving.
While the nation has made some great strides in reducing the discrepancy between truckers and viable parking spots, the nation still has a ways to go. Before, the rate was ten truckers to every standard parking spot, and while we expect the number to go below double digits once this survey is completed, there will still be a lot of work to do. Even if every truck parking spot were used 100% of the time to fulfill ten-hour break periods, that nation would need four times as many parking spots as it currently has. Until that happens, drivers will spend an inordinate amount of time looking for parking spots or worse, risk parking in illegal and unsafe areas such as a highway shoulder.
Conclusion
Truck parking is a major problem that’s solution will require the use of countless entities such as the federal government, state government, and private businesses. By filling out the Jason’s Law survey, you can help send a message to the federal government as to how much more work needs to be done to have the trucking industry work at its full capacity, rather than having truckers spend an average of an hour each night looking for a parking spot. Considering the lost tax revenue implications of fewer deliveries, governmental entities should consider truck parking implementation to have a positive return-on-investment where everyone wins.
All responses for the survey are due by February 27th, 2026, so be sure to fill out its ten questions as soon as you can.
