Trump Administration to Repeal “Woke” Emissions Regulations
When it comes to the trucking industry, it seems that the Trump Administration is taking an approach where actions speak louder than words. Rather than spending time focusing on the nitty-gritty finer details of the inner workings of the trucking industry, the administration of the 47th president is focused on getting goods from Point A to Point B. To that end, Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the Trump Administration is set to repeal a Biden-era regulation that is deemed to be “woke.”
Get Woke Go Broke
The regulation in question is from the Federal Highway Administration, which commands states to establish emission-reduction goals and eventually reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50% in seven years.
Announced via the Federal Register, this rollback is stated to “alleviate a burden…that, had it been implemented, would have imposed costs with no predictable level of benefits and without clear legal authority.”
The decision allows states’ Departments of Transportation to still voluntarily do their own measurements of CO2 emissions, among other pollutants, but no longer makes it required.
American Trucking Associations’ Dan Horvath, who works with studying regulations, sees this as a boon to the trucking industry.
“States are best equipped to determine their transportation needs, but FHWA’s GHG emissions performance measures issued by the Biden administration would have created unnecessary bureaucratic barriers to access federal funds. Ultimately, this heavy-handed approach would have scrambled local priorities and undermined highway expansion projects, leading to greater traffic congestion and higher shipping costs that contribute to inflation. The trucking industry strongly supports the Trump administration’s decision to repeal this rule that lacked statutory authority.”
Conclusion
With the requirement being removed but states still being given the go-ahead of doing reporting of their own volition, we are likely to see a schism in terms of state reporting. California with its California Air Resources Board is likely to stay the course in working to reduce emissions, while other states such as Wyoming likely will not.
Overall, however, as time moves forward, trucks are becoming less and less emitting of carbon dioxide. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics shows that CO2 emissions on average have gone down by about 16% in the last 25 years.
