Trucking Jobs Experience Slight Uptick in May 2023

Another month, another update regarding the trucking industry job numbers, courtesy of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

May 2023 Numbers

• Initial estimate for May 2023 is 1,609,200.
• Revised number for April 2023 is 1,608,600. This is a slight decrease from the initial estimation of 1,612,500.
• Final employment count for March 2023 is 1,607,600. Last month it was estimated to be 1,609,500, and the month before that 1,612,000.
• If the updated preliminary numbers for production employees in April 2023 holds, it will be an increase of over 11,000 from March at 1,376,600.

So while the initial estimates for the previous months were originally higher than they are now, looking month-to-month still shows a consistent increase, one that has been going since February of this year, with a sharp increase in nonsupervisory employees to boot.

Additionally, truckers on average received a slightly heavier paypacket in May, with the average wage increasing 80 cents to $30.80, and average weekly hours increasing 12 minutes to 40.9 hours. Combined, this means an average weekly pay of $1,259.72 compared to $1,221.

Conclusion

One of the strongest aspects of the trucking industry is its resiliency: its ability to keep on rolling regardless of hardships as small and predictable as the slow season to as big and shocking as the coronavirus pandemic of 2020. This month is the second-highest month of employment on record, beaten only by January 2023 with 1,611,400 employees, and if things continue going the way they have been since February, it will only be a few months before that record is broken yet again.
