Truck Safety Coalition Lists Deadliest States to Truck
The Truck Safety Coalition (TSC) is dedicated to bringing awareness about the potential safety risks involved with trucking in order to minimize them, in pursuit of that ever elusive goal of zero annual truck deaths. To that end, it has compiled data from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) to find what states have a propensity for tragedy. Here is what they found.
2021, By Total Number
12. South Carolina: 144
11. Alabama: 150
10. Pennsylvania: 162
9. Indiana: 167
8. North Carolina: 172
7. Tennessee: 179
6. Illinois: 180
5. Ohio: 220
4. Georgia: 244
3. Florida: 373
2. California: 437
1. Texas: 806
This data having some of the most populous states in the nation may make it seem ineffectual, and to that end the TSC has also provided states when factoring in population size.
2021, Per 100,000 People
12. Texas: 2.7
11. South Carolina: 2.8
10. Kentucky: 2.8
9. Nebraska: 2.9
8. Louisiana: 2.9
7. Alabama: 3.0
6. Wyoming: 3.3
5. Oklahoma: 3.4
4. Montana: 3.4
3. Mississippi: 3.6
2. Arkansas: 3.8
1. New Mexico: 4.2
Conclusion–and Some Good News
The TSC is using its report to call on Congress to instate requirements for executive regulators to require safety technology in an effort to curb truck-related fatalities, such as speed limiters and side underrails.
While this article has overall been depressing, there is some light at the end of this tunnel. Preliminary data compiled by the NHTSA suggests that 2022 and 2023 have been safer years on the road compared to 2020 and 2021, which were record years due to fewer vehicles on the road due to the coronavirus pandemic. It turns out that a little bit of traffic on the road is healthy, as it decreases the chances of drivers taking unnecessary risks. That is not to say we approve of traffic that causes significant slowdown for everyone involved, but more obstacles to avoid on the road can cause a driver to be more alert at the wheel.
