Trailer Sales for both November and December 2022 Beat Prior Year
Can we interest you in a double feature? The trucking industry has lately been firing on all cylinders, and trailer sales have not been an exception to the rule. Unlike the rest of the trucking industry, December saw an acceleration of trailer sales. ACT Research has the numbers.
November and December 2022 Trailer Sales
According to ACT Research’s final numbers for both months, November 2022 saw net trailer orders at 39,590 and December experienced 57,300.
For the trailer order count in November, it is 17% lower than the month prior, but 22% above the year prior.
While the trucking industry starts to lose steam in December due to fleets ordering assets for the holiday season well in advance, trailer sales bucked the trend. December was nearly 46% higher than November and was 115% above December 2021, more than double. Jennifer McNealy, Director–CV Market Research & Publications at ACT Research, says it is the second-highest month of trailer sales since they started tracking in 1996.
What is the cause for these intense numbers at the end of the year this time around? Our hypothesis is that trailers are experiencing what trucks had experienced a few months prior in September: demand outpaced supply for so long that once there was anything resembling an excess of supply, it was immediately grabbed by fleets who had been waiting months to get their hands on trailers. This is supported by the fact that trucks and trailers are a team, one cannot work without the other, and if truck sales go up trailer sales are sure to follow.
Conclusion
It is likely that January’s numbers will follow in the pattern as to what happened with big rig sales: while next month is likely to be lower than the extremely high bar that the end of 2022 set, it will almost certainly be higher than the sales in January 2022. Hopefully we are not tempting fate with this prediction, and will issue an apology if things go south.
