The Most and Least Safe States to Drive at Night
Some people prefer to drive during the night, which is understandable: there is something special about the serene calm of the darkness while there are fewer vehicles on the road. But driving at night can also come with its own perils as well, most obviously, it being harder to see, but even things you might not have thought about such as an increased likelihood of fatigued and drunk drivers. Zanes Law, personal injury lawyers headquartered in Arizona, analyzed fatal crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to find out which states are the safest and least safe to pull an all-nighter on the road.
Methodology
Zanes Law took the total number of fatal crashes from 2017 to 2021 for each state and found out the percentages wherein the unfortunate event took place at night. The higher the percentage, the more dangerous it is to drive at night. For instance, Hawaii, while having one of the lowest counts of total crashes, had well over half of them happen at night, and topped the list. Comparing the data as a percentage inherently adjusts for differences in population.
Most Dangerous
- New Jersey, 54.46%.
- Louisiana, 55.54%.
- Rhode Island, 55.59%.
- Connecticut, 55.98%.
- Maryland, 56.37%.
- South Carolina, 56.75%.
- Texas, 59.01%.
- Florida, 58.30%.
- California, 58.32%.
- Hawaii, 59.01%
Most Safe
- West Virginia, 44.14%.
- Minnesota, 43.79%.
- Utah, 43.32%.
- Idaho, 43%.
- New Hampshire, 42.78%.
- Wyoming, 42.51%.
- Maine, 40.89%.
- South Dakota, 40.73%.
- Nebraska, 37.60%.
- Vermont, 37.07%.
Conclusion
These numbers raise the question as to whether or not driving at night is safer than during the day in states that have fewer than half of fatal accidents occurring at night. One thing to consider is that significantly fewer people drive at night than during the day, making it so that nighttime drivers are disproportionately represented in disasters compared to their makeup of total drivers. With that in mind, even with Vermont, the safest state of nighttime driving, it is statistically safer to drive during the day. Just that if you were going to drive at night, consider doing it in New Hampshire instead of Connecticut.
