Speeding Enforcement Blitz on July 26th in These Eleven States
Here is a fact that appears to be not so well known by people on the road: speeding is a bad idea. A coalition of eleven states wants to remind drivers of that important detail, and as such on July 26th they are working together to enforce speed limits more than usual, while also hopefully making some revenue from fines along the way!
Details
The eleven states in question:
- Arkansas
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Illinois
- Kansas
- Michigan
- Minnesota
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- Ohio
- Wisconsin
“We are asking drivers to please slow down,” said Iowa Traffic Safety Bureau Chief Brett Tjepkes. “Our goal is to save lives, and we’re putting all drivers on alert — the posted speed limit is the law. No excuses. On July 26 drivers will notice extra law enforcement on Iowa’s roads. If drivers choose to exceed the posted limit, they can expect a citation.”
The Cost of Speeding
When a vehicle collides into something, the amount of damage increases more with each mile per hour in speed the vehicle is going, based on the physics calculation of kinetic energy, which is mass times velocity squared. Assuming the mass is constant, a truck traveling from 55 MPH to 60 MPH puts on as much kinetic energy as it does moving from zero to 24 MPH. In contrast, traveling 100 miles at 60 MPH will only save you about nine minutes. Beyond that, speeding also has a drastic effect on fuel economy, as air resistance increases with the speed of any vehicle.
Conclusion
The reason we are telling you about this upcoming enhanced enforcement is twofold. One reason is to help you save money from a potential citation, but the more important aspect is so you can understand why speeding, especially behind the wheel of an 80,000 pound truck, is a bad idea. There are three ways to learn about the dangers of speeding: the easy way (what we just wrote), the hard way (a ticket), and the very hard way (a collision). We just hope that you will take our advice to heart, even beyond driving within eleven specific states on July 26th.
