Sean Duffy to Replace Fuel Economy Rule
When Joe Biden was in office, there was a set rule for fuel economy standards within the United States: the average of all 2031 models for cars must be or exceed 50.4 miles per gallon. Now that there is a new administration, Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has decided to axe that.
Details
The decision comes from a myriad of factors. First is the stringent requirements that were being placed on manufacturers having a strong negative impact on the future economy: trying to squeeze out every rotation of tires out of every drop of fuel. The other big reason is that Donald Trump ran on the “drill, baby, drill” mantra, and wants to kickstart the economy by bringing fossil fuels to the forefront.
Implications on Trucking
Why are we covering this if it mostly pertains to four-wheelers instead of those with eighteen? For one simple fact: commercial vehicles are downstream from personal ones. Many forms of technology that are becoming common on personal vehicles are making their way onto commercial trucks, for better or for worse, and as such increases in fuel economy standards would likely transfer over to commercial vehicles in the future, too. In a time where the trucking industry is ready to expand, this change in fuel efficiency requirements could stymie that growth.
Conclusion
This rewrite of the fuel efficiency rule is one of the first acts that DOT Secretary Sean Duffy has enacted since being confirmed by the Senate. It will be interesting to see how he compares to his predecessor, Pete Buttigieg, in the years to come.
This news comes hot off the trail of the California Air Resources Board announcing its decision to table an anti-diesel fuel mandate that would have made operating a diesel-powered vehicle within its state borders by 2042 illegal. It looks like Trump is putting his “drill, baby, drill” motto to good use and keeping up on his promise, as fossil fuels are seemingly destined to make a comeback. We will just have to wait and see what happens to fuel prices in the next four years.
