Sacramento Airport to Get Electric Charging Depot
Sacramento is a stone’s throw away from our headquarters in Roseville, California, so we are excited to hear and to report that the Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is getting an infrastructure investment that will help bring electric trucks one step closer to becoming the mainstream form of trucking fuel.

WattEV, a company from Long Beach, is investing $34 million into building an electric truck charging depot near SMF. Why in Sacramento if they are headquartered in Long Beach? Because they have plans to expand northward, and so they want to get ahead of their own curve.
Details are currently sparse, but what is known is juicy. It is expected to have 30 small chargers for normal cars, 90 medium chargers for commercial vehicles of all sizes, and 18 new Megawatt Charging Systems, which are expected to fully charge a heavy-duty truck in under an hour. While still longer to use than diesel refueling, the Megawatt Charging System is a testimony to how far electric charging has come in the past decade, when charging a standard car to go 40 miles took ten hours.
Beyond simply charging trucks, the location plans to provide most of its own energy through 15.6 megawatts of solar panels in and around the depot.
WattEV is providing this depot through a federal grant from the Department of Transportation, meaning that costs to use the chargers, if there are any, will be limited to little more than the cost of the electricity used to charge the vehicle and to maintain the property in acceptable condition.
Conclusion
This charging depot, able to handle 138 vehicles simultaneously, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. There is currently no news in regards to amenities set in place for truckers to us while waiting for their trucks to charge, but it is highly unlikely that the government and WattEV have not thought of this, and it may just become a truck stop as well as a charging depot, where truckers can take a shower and buy some snacks while waiting to get back on the road for his or her delivery.
