Robin Hutcheson Steps Down from FMCSA Administrator

The role of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Administrator is looking more and more like a carousel all the time, as Robin Hutcheson announced that she is stepping down from the position.

“It has been the most profound honor to serve in the Biden-Harris Administration, and I am grateful to President Biden for appointing me to these roles,” Hutcheson said. “I thank Secretary Buttigieg for his leadership and confidence and recognize the dedicated team of professionals at the Department of Transportation who work hand in hand with industry partners to serve the American people and keep our country moving forward.”

The issue of the FMCSA being unable to maintain a consistent administration is not a partisan issue; since 2019 the position has been held, either in an official or acting manner, by five (now six) different people.

Robin Hutcheson’s time at the FMCSA was filled with numerous changes to the agency. While continuing the work of implementing regulations popular for some and unpopular for others–such as speed limiters–two notable changes include the rules to fight broker fraud, and the revision of what constitutes a State of Emergency so that state governors could not misuse the term for the purpose of putting more truckers on the road.

The Acting Administrator will be the current FMCSA Executive Director and Chief Safety Officer, Sue Lawless. No doubt she has heard the puns of working in the public sector regarding her last name.

Conclusion

There is an age-old saying that too many coincidences in a row are not a coincidence. What is causing such rapid turnover from the FMCSA Administrator position in government, a turnover that impacts both Republicans and Democrats? Depending on the outcome of the 2024 election, the turnover may just increase to seven different people.

Usually with reports of these changes at the FMCSA, there is news as to what the person is going to do next in their career. As of the time of writing, there is no information as to what Hutcheson will do next, but we hope for the best for her as we have every previous FMCSA Administrator.
