Robin Hutcheson Is Now the FMCSA Administrator
Months after it was first put into motion, the Senate vote for Robin Hutcheson to become the first FMCSA Administrator since October 2019 has completed. Robin Hutcheson is now the FMCSA Administrator.

It has been almost three years since Ray Martinez left the position in October 2019. Since then, numerous Acting Administrators have held down the fort including Jim Mullen, Wiley Deck, and Meerra Joshi, but for various reasons they all departed from the post before becoming Administrator. Having worked as Deputy Administrator under Joshi, Hutcheson was next in line to become Acting Administrator when Joshi left for a position with New York City.
The timeline for Robin Hutcheson to become Administrator has been arduous: to understand how long it has been, Meera Joshi announced her departure before the end of last year. Her confirmation hearing was in June.
Her finally becoming an Administrator has been met with positive reception by various trucking special interest groups.
“In her time as Acting Administrator, Robin has been a true partner with our industry – working to confront a number of issues facing trucking,” ATA President and CEO Chris Spear said in a statement Thursday evening after Hutcheson was officially confirmed. “Whether it is addressing safety concerns, ongoing supply chain issues or workforce development, she has been open to engaging with our industry and we look forward to continuing our ongoing, candid dialogue about these challenges and to engaging with her and her agency to implement solutions that uphold safety and improve efficiency in trucking and across the supply chain.”
Conclusion
Having an Administrator for the FMCSA has been a long time coming. For a frame of reference: this is the first time it has happened since the coronavirus pandemic started. With the title of head of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rotating around like a game of musical chairs, we are glad to finally see some consistency with the role. We wish Robin Hutcheson many fruitful years in this position and in keeping the nation’s roads a safer place to be for all who drive them.
