NCDOT Warns of Tumultuous Road to Recovery
Hurricane Helene has come and gone, and now states on the East Coast are doing their best to pick up the pieces from the disaster. One of the losses was a significant portion of the I-40 in North Carolina, near the border of Tennessee, as well as other roads in the Tarheel State.
Details
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) says “All roads in Western North Carolina should be considered closed and non-emergency travel is prohibited.” Not only is it dangerous to drive there at this time, but doing so can stall the progress of emergency vehicles with drive suited for the situation getting to their destinations quicker.
As of the time of writing, DriveNC.gov, a website that tracks road conditions in the state, says that Western North Carolina is experiencing 133 different road closure incidents, and has labeled a massive swath of the state as an “essential travel only” zone.
The cherry on top of the entire matter is that officials do not have a timeline as to when I-40, the most heavily traveled road in the area, will be repaired, but estimates that it will not be until October 2025.
Conclusion
It is imperative that if you plan to drive around the area where North Carolina meets Tennessee that you avoid the roads that are closed, for the safety of yourself and others, as well as your cargo. It seems the current plan of action is to continue traveling east or west until you find a different interstate to travel.
The change in road conditions in South Carolina comes on the heels of Hurricane Helene, the most devastating hurricane to hit the United States in 2024. If you wish to help provide relief, North Carolina has issued a State of Emergency temporarily suspending some of the regulations that would impede recovery, including ones regarding hours-of-service and non-participants of the International Registration Plan and the International Fuel Tax Agreement. Though recent changes to the State of Emergency system have required durations of 14-day intervals, it is highly likely that this one will be extended numerous times to come.
