Missouri Awards Almost $6 Million in CDL Grants
Missouri is spending money into workforce education. Out of $30 million in total to be given to 19 organizations across the state, four truck driving schools are receiving $5.9 million in grants.
Details
The money is granted by way of the American Rescue Plan Act Workforce Training Grant, which Governor Mike Parson says, “From day one, our administration has made it a top priority to ensure employers have the workers they need to expand and grow. A stronger workforce means a stronger tomorrow, and this program will go a long way in ensuring Missouri workers can meet the demands of the future.”
The split is as follows:
- $2.5 million to Meet the Need Inc., who will use the money not only to train Class A and Class B drivers, but also forklift operators, computer coders, and shipyard welders.
- $2.1 million to the St. Louis-St. Louis County Junior College District that will go exclusively to CDL training.
- $990,000 to the Community College District of Mid Missouri, exclusively used on CDL training.
- $300,000 for Ozark Action Inc., for truck drivers, health care, and manufacturing.
In total, the spending will be used to train an estimated 750 truck drivers, plus some miscellaneous jobs in fields such as forklift operation and health care. This comes out to almost $8,000 per person, which is a typical rate for truck driving school.
Maggie Kost, acting director of Missouri’s Economic Development Department, hopes that this will help the people with the will, but not the funds, to make better lives for themselves. “At the same time, it will equip real people with job skills that improve their lives, provide for their families, and benefit their communities” she said in a statement.
Conclusion
Despite record employment in the trucking industry, states are working to get more truckers on the road, such as Florida did last October. At the very least, the more truckers that are on the road, the more leverage truckers have for legislation that will benefit all of them, such as more public parking spaces, which is something the industry can certainly use.
