Mack Truck Employees on Strike
It seems strikes are common in the current news cycle. First there was news about a potential UPS strike as well as a strike upon Yellow, and now Mack Trucks has joined the fray.
Details
Contrary to the previous two companies, which were logistical companies working with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), this is a truck manufacturer that works with the United Auto Workers (UAW).
The news came when the UAW reached an agreement with Mack Trucks, but had that agreement voted strongly against it (73%). The agreement offered a 10% increase in year one for all employees, and an additional 20% on top of that over the course of the next five years, as well as a guarantee for the employee not paying any more than they already are for their share in health insurance benefits. UAW President Shawn Fain voiced his support with the workers who voted, saying the agreement did not go far enough and omitted key items such as holiday schedules and other benefits.
“We are committed to the collective bargaining process, and remain confident that we will be able to arrive at an agreement that delivers competitive wages and benefits for our employees and their families, while safeguarding our future as a competitive company and stable long-term employer,” Macke President Stephen Roy said in a statement about the strike. “We look forward to returning to negotiations as soon as possible.”
Conclusion
Clearly the strike will make it so that no additional Mack Trucks are produced for the time being, but there is no released number as to how many trucks per day that really is. Whatever the amount of would-be production halted as a result of this strike, it is sure to cause upward pressure on prices for both new and used vehicles for however long the negotiations take.
The news comes at a critical time when most truck manufacturers are opening their 2024 production slots for fleets to reserve new trucks. Both sides appear to want to reach an agreement of some sort, so it is likely that, unless UAW twists the knife, it will not have an effect on Mack Trucks’ 2024 endeavors.
