Commercial vehicles haul approximately 70% of the nation’s freight and are invaluable when it comes to emergencies such as hurricanes and earthquakes that cut off vital infrastructure, requiring the delivery of important supplies such as blankets, drinking water, and petroleum fuels, but HW Electro, a Japanese car maker, has thought of a new thing its truck can deliver to those in need: electricity itself.

It is no surprise that electric commercial vehicles are slowly but surely picking up momentum in the United States, in part due to their economical value (electricity is cheaper per mile than diesel), as well as regulatory requirements. However, with the HW Electro Puzzle that the company is hoping to bring to the United States, it has hopes of becoming the premier “emergency relief” vehicle.
The Puzzle is all about maximizing volume, things that can fit in the truck, which is why it comes in the shape of a cube. But what differentiates it from other cargo trucks and what HW Electro hopes will make it stand out above the rest is the exterior panel on the driver’s side, complete with AC ports and USB ports, that enables the Puzzle’s fuel to become its own source of relief in emergencies. People in need of electrical gadgets such as a toaster or charging their phones will be able to do so more easily should the power go out during an emergency. It also functions as its own Wi-Fi hotspot, so those in danger can get news updates immediately.
Conclusion
The idea for a cargo van that can provide electricity came in wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, where electrical power was very hard to find during the aftermath.
We are very excited to see these vehicles hit stateside, of which HW Electro has a current timeline for 2025.
