Iowa Truck Schools to Get Almost $5 Million in Grants
If your fleet hires drivers from the Hawkeye state, you can take solace in knowing that there are going to be more truckers to hire in the years to come as the cost of CDL training tuition decreases, or at the very least does not increase, due to state grants provided by the Iowa state government.
Details
With demands for goods in Iowa projected to increase in Iowa through 2030 to the extent that the state would need 10,000 more drivers to service its economy, Governor Kim Reynolds has signed off on $4.84 million in community college grants to train approximately 1,0300 people annually. The stipulation for the funding is that the CDL-training community colleges will be required to freeze their tuition rates for the next five years, indirectly passing the federal grant money onto truckers who no longer need to fear rampant inflation should they hope to train in 2027. The grant money is expected to go into purchasing tractor-trailer combinations for real-life behind-the-wheel training, as well as for realistic training simulator software and hardware for the newest drivers to get their feet wet before taking a seat behind the real, over 10,000 pound deal.
“The pathway to finding a job as a truck driver, one of our most-needed occupations, runs through getting a CDL license,” Governor Kim Reynolds said in a statement announcing the grant funding. “It’s important that we do everything we can to not only make it easier for individuals to obtain these licenses, but also to support the long-term viability of the programs that made it possible to gain that experience right here in Iowa.”
Conclusion
In a convoluted way, this is a redistribution of wealth away from the Iowa taxpayer, but goes to those who are willing to put in the time and effort to learn how to become a truck driver and work for a living.
In a world where taxpayer money is used for all sorts of questionable things (such as studying pigeon gambling), this boost to give citizens a chance at a better life seems like a worthwhile investment, even solely from a financial perspective of generating more taxpayer revenue for Iowa in the decades to come.
