I-95 Bridge Reopened
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced on Friday, June 23rd that the I-95 bridge that had collapsed earlier this month was now open once again for drivers to travel across.
Details
This is not to say that the road work is complete by any stretch of the imagination, rather, temporary bridge crossings that span three lanes each way have reopened. The makeshift bridge has been made out of a special type of recycled glass, and will slowly be replaced by good old-fashioned concrete over time.
With the road previously servicing 160,000 travelers every day, and the shortest detour adding 23 miles to any given trip, the speed with which this road repair has been done has been quite the miracle.
The Future of Infrastructure
This is going to sound crazy, but the quick time it took PennDOT to make a makeshift bridge to enable traffic makes us more optimistic about the future of American infrastructure. While it ultimately would be better for everyone involved to repair the roads before they collapse, this shows that governments, namely state governments, can get its rear into gear when a fire is placed underneath it. If there is a similar instance where a bridge collapses due to wear and tear from numerous decades of use, as opposed to here where the collapse was caused by an explosion, there is a good chance that the economy may just be able to mitigate most of the damage.
Conclusion
The glass aggregate being used on the makeshift bridge is stronger on a per-pound basis when compared to concrete, making it an apt temporary solution for bridges that go over other roads such as this game in the I-95. It is possible that we may hear more about the glass aggregate being used in more infrastructure projects in the future.
We might give you an update when the bridge is fully completed, where the makeshift glass aggregate becomes replaced with concrete. Considering that the level of need has been reduced from its critical mass, however, it may take a while for that to come to fruition. While the government can be fast when it needs to be, it can also be slow when it wants to be!
