FMCSA Removes Four More ELDs
It is the same old song and dance: the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced four more ELDs that are to be unviable for the purposes of commercial trucking.
Details
The announcement came on December 30th and will officially be no longer tenable on March 1st. The four Electronic Logging Devices are:
- P3TS
- Forward Thinking Systems—Field Warrior ELD (BYOD)
- Forward Thinking Systems—Field Warrior ELD (Garmin)
- Dynamic ELD
The same general rules apply when an ELD is removed: drivers and fleets who use these are given a grace period (this time, until March 1st) to use paper logs before getting a new one. The FMCSA asks traffic enforcement to accept paper logs on these trucks until that time comes.
Conclusion
With ELDs being removed from the list of accepted models left and right, it starts to beg the question as to how drivers are supposed to keep up. Theoretically, a driver could have had a RENAISSANCE ELD, moved to a Kami ELD, then a Dynamic ELD, leading to three changes in five months.
Derek Barrs, Administrator of the FMCSA, says that he wants to change the system of how registering for things in the trucking industry works, making it harder to get onto lists but also harder to be taken off of them as well. This plan would be a good one going forward, as the FMCSA has removed numerous ELDs in the past few months, leaving drivers and fleets less confident in their purchases, especially if they have already had to make a change in the past.
Originally intended to both be easier for the driver to input (automatically) while also being significantly harder to deceive with in comparison to paper logs, the constant change of what ELDs are allowed and allowing paper logs in the interim has almost led to a bit of a paper log revolution, as truckers may often find themselves needing to revert to paper logs before getting a new ELD, which has slightly more potential for number tampering, defeating the entire purpose of mandating ELDs in the first place. Hopefully the FMCSA is able to get a grip on the revolving door of allowable ELDs soon.
