FMCSA Hires New Deputy Administrator
When Robin Hutcheson was promoted from Deputy Administrator to the top of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), there was a vacancy for the Deputy position. The USDOT has found the person for the role: a man named Earl Adams Jr.
The Experience of Earl Adams Jr.
Normally, the Deputy Administrator position does not need a Senate confirmation hearing, but since it was the de facto highest position at the FMCSA for many years, they still happened. Now, with Robin Hutcheson at the helm, she has hand-appointed Earl Adams Jr. to be her replacement as Deputy, her second-in-command.
The owner of a Juris Doctor degree from Boston College Law School, Adams has worked with the FMCSA before, acting on the legal side as the FMCSA’s chief counsel. In short, he has worked as the head of the FMCSA’s prosecution and defense departments when a relevant regulation heads to court. Additionally, he has provided rulemaking advice in regards to the future of autonomous trucking. With this role, Adams will need to become acquainted with the day-to-day problems that truckers face on the road and use it to better enact policy alongside Robin Hutcheson.
“Earl is a mission-driven leader and thinker who embodies the values of our agency and the entire Department of Transportation,” Hutcheson said in a statement introducing Adams. “His vast experience, intellect, and people skills are exactly what the role of deputy administrator calls for. I look forward to continuing to work with Earl on policies, initiatives, data-based strategies to prevent crashes, improve safety outcomes on our roadways, and ultimately achieve our goal of zero fatalities.”
Conclusion
This event marks the first time since the turn of the decade that both the Administrator and Deputy Administrator positions have been filled. We hope that through hard work and determination, Adams can learn to relate to the average trucker and combine it with his vast legal experience to enact policy that is both safe and unobtrusive, while also allowing some leeway for when there is a State of Emergency.
