Florida Has State of Emergency for Flooding
There is an old adage that says April is the wettest month of the year. While that is not actually the case (that title goes to June), it seems to be the case for some sections of Florida this year.
If you have watched the television news as of late, there is a good chance you have seen video footage of the rampant flooding going on in the Sunshine State right now. We thought here at TopMark Funding over in California had it rough in January, but this is an entirely different level.
Details
On April 12th, the Fort Lauderdale area experienced twenty-five inches of rain in a single day, an event that experts estimate happens once every millenia at most.
In direct response, Governor Ron DeSantis has issued a State of Emergency. How are truckers affected? It is hard to say at first glance; the Declaration states that regulations that would impede recovery from the weather disaster are allowed to be suspended by the relevant regulatory bodies. As it says in Section 4.B.
“Each State agency may suspend the provisions of any regulatory statute prescribing the procedures for conduct of state business or the orders or rules of that agency, if strict compliance with the provisions of any such statute, order, or rule would in any way prevent, hinder, or delay necessary action in coping with the emergency.”
While this vague wording does cover a wide net for numerous regulatory bodies, it does not list specifics regarding traffic and transportation, which will no doubt be left to the Flordia Department of Transportation (FDOT).
What is included in the Declaration is talk of appropriating money from the Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund for agencies that need it to get relief done. With this added cash flow, it is highly likely that the state government will want to contract with trucking companies to deliver relief supplies such as emergency blankets, food, and potable water.
Conclusion
Our current suggestion if you want to help is to watch the FDOT’s news webpage to learn if and when they will be suspending transportation regulations to make it easier for truckers to do their thing.
Whatever the case may be, the State of Emergency is expected to expire 60 days from now. By then it will be June, which although tends to be the wettest month of the year, has a near-zero chance of bringing with it another once-in-a-millenia rainfall.
