Federal Government to Revamp Ports of Entry
The General Services Administration (GSA) has announced its plans of using $3.4 billion from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 on ports of entry. The money will be spent on fifty projects in eleven states to revitalize the infrastructure of international commerce, with both our northern and southern neighbors.
Details
There are fifty total projects that the GSA has initiated:
- 26 ports of entry are getting building upgrades.
- 21 ports of entry are getting new pavement.
- Three projects are lease-purchase agreements along the border of the United States and Mexico.
Through these projects, the GSA is hoping that it will increase processing capacity at every included location, requiring vehicles of all types to spend less time waiting before being able to enter or exit the United States.
One such example of this is the Bridge of the Americas that connects Ciudad Juárez with El Paso. Built in the 1990s, it currently only has two lanes in each direction for commercial vehicles.
Along the American-Canadian border, one example is the Blaine, Washington port of entry. Two million vehicles travel through the town with under 6,000 residents every year, so any increase in processing capacity is sure to help with traffic congestion, and not just for the township’s citizens!
Conclusion
Infrastructure is a hot topic in the current news. Numerous bridges and roads with decades beyond their standard useful life cause grief to truckers, both directly (safety concerns) and indirectly (vehicle damage).
Administrator Carahan of the GSA sees the various projects as necessary investments that will benefit almost everyone involved.
“As we celebrate the first anniversary of President Biden signing this historic legislation into law, GSA continues to maximize the impact of these investments in ways that create good-paying jobs, strengthen supply chains, and enhance the safety and security of our border,” Carahan said in the statement announcing what progress has been made so far.
Construction on all fifty projects has already begun, but will take varying time to finish depending on the complexity of the work to be done. As it stands, seven out of fifty of the projects have been completed since the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 became law in November of 2021.
