Daimler Trucks to Test Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Daimler Trucks, the folks behind popular truck brands Freightliner and Western Star, are partnering with numerous companies to test out its hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Electric trucks have been in the news a lot lately, but another piece of the equation to supplant diesel fuel and make trucking more green is hydrogen fuel cells. When fully developed, the only waste product they will create will be water.

To that end, Daimler Trucks has designed its GenH2 truck, running entirely on hydrogen, and is working with numerous energy and logistical companies, including:

• Amazon.
• Air Products.
• Ineos.
• Holcim.
• Wiedmann & Winz.

The project is primarily taking place in Germany, with their factory there having the capacity to manufacture 470 GenH2 trucks everyday.

Daimler Trucks is hoping that once the testing is complete and the GenH2 is ready to go to market, it will have many advantages that will make it the fuel of choice for truckers.

It can be refilled with liquid hydrogen in approximately 15 minutes, can go 650 miles on a single tank, and the fuel is significantly lighter than the battery of an electric vehicle, enabling the truck to carry a higher payload and generate more revenue as a result.

Likewise with electric vehicles, however, the refueling infrastructure is very primitive in its development and may take a few years and a few billions in governmental investment before it becomes a viable alternative to diesel fuel.

Conclusion

There is currently no official timeline set for when the GenH2 truck will be readily available for the public to use, or as to when TopMark Funding will be able to offer funding solutions for GenH2 trucks. If they prove to be very popular as diesel is slowly but surely phased out, we believe it is only a matter of time before they will become an important part of any fleet’s trucking composition.

The race to be the first company to release a fully hydrogen-powered commercial truck to the United States market will certainly be an interesting one. Will it be an established company like Daimler, or a new tech company with a lot of promise? We must wait and see.
