Clean Freight Coalition Founded
It is no surprise to anyone that federal regulations are becoming stricter and stricter in regards to emissions from the transportation industry, especially regarding Class 8 trucks. While nobody is against cleaner air, some trucking industry stakeholders believe a more modest approach to the problem is the key to balancing economic and environmental interests. Out of this necessity, the Clean Freight Coalition was born.
Details
The Clean Freight Coalition is the brainchild created from a collaboration of numerous trucking organizations, including the American Trucking Associations (ATA) and the Truckload Carriers Association. It is a special interest group that lists its objectives on the front of its web homepage:
- Educate policy makers on the incredible progress the trucking industry has made in reducing emissions and protecting the environment.
- Promote the work underway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from freight transportation.
- Advocate for sound public policies that transition to a zero-emission future in a manner that assures affordable and reliable freight transportation and protects the nation’s supply chain.
At the inaugural meeting, executive director Jim Mullen said: “Trucking is the backbone of our economy and critical to the nation’s supply chain. It is an honor to lead the CFC in its pursuit to get to zero emissions in a responsible and feasible manner.”
Does his name sound familiar? If it does, it is because Jim Mullen was one of the acting administrators of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in the past four years.
ATA’s president and CEO Chris Spear says he is happy to see this organization assembled. “To get to zero, we have to be honest and transparent about the road ahead. Success depends on a national energy strategy that is inclusive of our industry—the most central and critical link in the supply chain.”
Conclusion
The Clean Freight Coalition hopes that it can be a spokesperson for the trucking industry at large in both guiding future policy and to show how far the industry has come in regards to curbing pollution, which it lists on its Progress webpage:
“Truck engines manufactured today emit 98% less nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) than those built thirty-five years ago. In fact, 60 of today’s trucks emit what just one truck emitted in 1988.”
