CALSTART Launches ZETI Tool

CALSTART is a non-profit nationwide organization hoping to help revolutionize the trucking industry through technological advancements in energy. To that end, they have created an online program called the Zero-Emission Technology Inventory (ZETI) Data Explorer. It is a cool tool that can help you, the truck driver/fleet owner, compare and contrast the specifications of current and upcoming zero emission vehicles.

Features

The program has a dynamic filtering system that allows you to narrow down based on what you want out of a future zero-emission truck. For example, if you are looking for an electric medium-duty truck that is available to add to your fleet now, it will filter out the International models, of which the eMV Class 6 is set to release at the end of the year.

Once you have picked up to three separate models, it will put them side-by-side for you to compare them on various specifications including but not limited to:

• Range of the vehicle on a single fueling.
• How much fuel the vehicle can take in a single fueling.
• Payload.
• First available year.
• Tax incentive(s) for the vehicle, if any.
• A link to the OEM’s webpage regarding the model.

Here is an example comparing Hyzon’s, Nikola’s, and Tesla’s most prominent Class 8 models:

In total, there are over 800 different zero-emission models to compare and contrast from a wide breadth of commercial vehicles:

• Transit bus.
• Coach bus.
• School bus.
• Shuttle bus.
• Cargo van.
• Medium-duty step van.
• Medium-duty truck.
• Heavy-duty-truck.
• Yard tractor.
• Other, including but not limited to dump trucks and food trucks.

Conclusion

We found ZETI to be very intuitive and easy to use, and as such we are recommending it to you to check out, poke around and see who is manufacturing what. By using ZETI, you can also learn the value of waiting a few years for a more sophisticated truck, as opposed to buying into the first fuel cell trucks on the market.
