The bridge in question is the Brent Spence Bridge, which connects Kentucky and Ohio over the Ohio River. Originally built for 80,000 travelers a day, it now doubles that in a single direction, meaning it is roughly at quadruple capacity and stands as a traffic nightmare.
The construction project has two steps: the first is to reconfigure the Brent Spence bridge to be for local traffic purposes, and the other is to build an entirely new, massive bridge for interstate travelers, for those whose final destination is far away from the Kentucky-Ohio border. The new bridge, currently unnamed, will have five lanes heading in each direction.
“This is one of the largest highway construction projects ever undertaken in the U.S.,” said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray. “We are confident that this experienced team, with their solid track record of completing projects approaching this size, possesses the talent, skills, and know-how to deliver this complex bridge and highway system.”
The entire project is expected to cost $3.1 billion, but because the current bridge has $700 billion in cargo travel across it every year, this new bridge is expected to pay dividends from time saved for drivers.

Construction is starting imminently, and is expected to be finished by the end of 2029. The bridge is fully expected to stay open during its reconfiguration, so commercial drivers can continue to travel across it until its bigger and younger brother is finished.
