ATRI Study Links Safety with Associations
Do you want your fleet to suffer fewer crashes? Apparently one of the easiest methods to do so is to join a state’s trucking association, according to research compiled from the American Transportation Research Institute.
Details
The study, which you can read in full provided you give the ATRI your information, has 35 pages of statistical terminology that separates people into three groups:
- Those who are current members of a state or national trucking organization.
- Those who are former members of a state or national trucking organization.
- Those who have never been a member of a state or national trucking organization.
Their compiled data found that not only do current members reign supreme in terms of reducing total accidents per 100 million miles, but also get into less damaging crashes.
When it came to state trucking associations, current members averaged 95.10 crashes per 100 million miles, former members averaged 121.21, and “never members” averaged 146.33.
Additionally, the report found a link between out-of-service violations being lowest for current members, and highest for “never members.”
Conclusion
The ATRI ends its report by suggesting that both the government and the insurance industry could use state and/or national trucking association membership status to better determine the likelihood of a trucker or a fleet at large getting into a vehicular accident.
“The research findings herein could be leveraged by multiple stakeholders within industry and
government. For example, there could be some credence for regulatory and enforcement
agencies to consider association membership in their safety targeting and weighting algorithms.
While this may seem somewhat controversial, limited enforcement resources, along with the
statistical validity of this research, would help rationalize that marginal carriers should be
prioritized over safer carriers.”
“Finally, the insurance industry should consider active association membership in their actuarial
formulas and premium settings.”
Should membership status become associated with lower risk of accident, it may even be able to pay for itself in the future due to becoming offset by reduced insurance costs. We will have to wait and see as to whether or not this research leads to changes in how the trucking industry operates.
