ATRI Releases Top 100 Trucking Bottlenecks for 2024
The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has once again done some data collecting to determine where truckers might want to avoid if they want to get to any destination quickly.
Methodology
The methodology used to find their data is similar to what it was in 2023.
- Assume the optimal speed for a truck at each bottleneck is 55 MPH.
- Find the truck’s average speed for a given hour and then multiply it by the number of trucks that were part of that hour block to find the “congestion value”. By this metric, one truck traveling 1 MPH is less of an indicator of congestion than 60 trucks moving 54 MPH.
- Add the congestion values of all twenty-four hours for the day. This year there was an increase in the number of locations surveyed at 328 locations, with 7872 data points to consider. The highest number wins.
As mentioned in our 2023 coverage of the list, the methodology has a notable flaw in that it assumes all roads are ideally traveled upon at 55 MPH. A more accurate measure would be to find the speed limit for each and then determine the congestion value by how many miles per hour less the speed is each hour than that at each location.
Cool Data Tidbits
Here is the data that they found, summarized:
- First place and second place remained unchanged from 2023: those being Fort Lee, NJ: I-95 at SR 4 and Chicago, IL: I-294 at I-290/I-88, respectively.
- Third place for 2023 has been usurped by another road in the Windy City, Chicago, IL: I-55, which was not in the top 100 in 2023 (whether that is because it is a new entry or saw an increase in traffic is unknown). Houston I-45 at I-69/US 59 is now fourth.
- When looking at the top 100 bottlenecks, Texas is home to 13 of them. 2nd place is California with eight.
- North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma all have zero entries in the list. But for Texas, it would make a solid north-south wall of clear traffic.
Conclusion
If you are traveling across multiple states, it may be helpful to take a quick glance at the list of the top 100 trucking bottlenecks and plan accordingly. To see it in full, including methodology, follow the following link to the Top 100 Truck Bottlenecks – 2024 from the ATRI.
